TAG

Today's event announcement.

On February 12, we will hold a symposium featuring Professor Henry Mintzberg, a management scholar and world-renowned authority on "organization theory. The venue is Daikanyama Hillside Plaza in Daikanyama, Tokyo, and the event starts at 9:30 AM. There is no charge for participation, but since on-site participation is limited to 100 people, the event will also be delivered online.

We initially asked Professor Mintzberg to give a lecture, but he preferred to have a dialogue rather than to speak alone, so we have decided to use a dialogue format, inviting Mai Teshigawara, who specializes in organizational development, Takahiro Nakajima, Professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Oriental Culture (Director of the Institute of Oriental Culture), and Shu Yamaguchi, an author. I, Kimikazu Uemura, will serve as moderator (Professor Mintzberg will participate online, and the others will join from the venue).

Index Group has sponsored and hosted symposiums featuring thinker and economist Jacques Attali, Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize winner for microcredit, Harvard University professor Michael Sandel, and German philosopher Marcus Gabriel, who advocates "Ethical Capitalism". We have sponsored and hosted symposiums that have invited This symposium by Professor Mintzberg is also part of a series of symposium projects.

The first symposium with Mr. Atari was held in September 2020. At the time, the new coronavirus was raging around the world, and people were questioning the sustainability of business, or more specifically, the very framework of the capitalist economy. We invited Mr. Atari, who had proposed the concept of the "economy of life," to think about the future of society, the economy, and altruism.

The purpose of the dialogue with Mr. Yunus, Mr. Sandel, and Mr. Gabriel was also to think together about what we should focus on as a company in the changing global political and social environment.

This is the same reason why we invited Mr. Mintzberg this time. The world is becoming more and more conservative, led by the Trump administration in the United States. The world is moving away from the "altruism" that Mr. Atari, Mr. Sandel and others emphasized. In this situation, what should companies focus on, what should they value, and what kind of organization should they build? We would like to think about these points together.

Index Group's corporate philosophy is "Shikkai-no Spirit, Shikkai-no Tansei" (the spirit of Shikkai, the diligence of Shikkai). Shikkai is a term originating from traditional Japanese kimono making, and the specialists who brought together various craftsmen and tailored kimonos from untouched fabrics were called Shikkaiya. The Shikkaiya, who brings together the interests of such different stakeholders and practices sampo yoshi, is akin to a modern-day project manager. With this in mind, we value the word Shikkai.

I place a great deal of importance on the philosophy of Shikkai, and this feeling has been strengthened through the dialogue at the symposiums I have attended. Listening to the talks of some of the world's leading experts in the field, I have come to think more strongly about the philosophy of Shikkkai. I believe that this symposium will be a good opportunity to think about our philosophy and organization, and I hope you will join us.
