Seminar Event/Media

Symposium by Markus Gabriel was held, with Representative Uemura serving as moderator.

On August 28, Group President Uemura participated in the "Special Lecture Symposium by Marcus Gabriel" hosted by Index Group and Hayakawa Shobo and co-sponsored by the Institute of Oriental Culture at the University of Tokyo, and served as moderator of the panel discussion. The venue, the Yasuda Auditorium at the Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo, was filled to capacity with 1,100 people, witnessing the popularity of Mr. Gabriel, who is called the "rock star of philosophy.

Gabriel began his opening remarks in fluent Japanese. In his keynote speech, he explained the three conditions of capitalism (1) private means of production, 2) freedom of contract, and 3) free market, the meaning of the word ethics, and what he advocates as "ethical capitalism." If an ethical and political framework that encompasses his "eco-social liberalism" = ethical capitalism could be realized, he believes that our excessive neoliberal society would become much easier to live in.

The panel discussion featured Professor Takahiro Nakajima, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo, and Professor Sayaka Ogawa, a cultural anthropologist at Ritsumeikan University Graduate School. Uemura acted as moderator, and the panelists discussed themes such as moral facts, what is true profit, and coexistence around Gabriel. Professor Nakajima delivered the message that "human ethics are based on fundamental sociality," while Professor Ogawa made thought-provoking comments such as "we need others to be free."

Our group was approached by Hayakawa Publishing and participated from the planning stage in a symposium planned following the publication of Gabriel's new book, "The Age of Ethical Capitalism." The connection arose because Hayakawa Publishing was the publisher of the books of the keynote speakers (Professor Michael Sandel in 2021 and Muhammad Yunus in 2022) at the online international symposium hosted after COVID-19 by three general incorporated associations, of which our group's Social System Design Co., Ltd. serves as the administrative office. Our group also sympathized with the concept of "ethical capitalism" advocated by Gabriel, and decided to accept Hayakawa Publishing's proposal.

This symposium was held with the support of the Japan Construction Project Management System Council, the Environmental Future Forum, and the PPP Promotion Support Organization. Following the online international symposium we jointly held from 2020 to 2022, we received their support as they sympathized with the purpose of the project and the arguments of the speakers. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who participated.
